Pelayo (pālä`yō), d. 737, first king (c.718â€"737) of Asturias. He was elected king by the tribespeople of Asturias and by Visigothic leaders who had escaped Tariq.
Pelayo (690 â€" 737) was the first King of Asturias, ruling from 718 until his death. He is crediting with beginning the Christian reconquista of Spain from the Moors.
